Clarksville Police Department
The Clarksville Police Department is composed of 40 full-time officers, including a chief and assistant chief of police. These officers are assisted by Reserve Officers who are unpaid volunteers. The reserve officers must work a specified number of hours each month and participate in police training programs in order to remain in the Reserve Program.
The capacity of the department is also extended by members of the Safety Patrol. The Safety Patrol Officers take non-injury routine accident and incident reports. The police officers are also supported by seven communications officers and four clerical personnel.
The reserves and safety patrol help augment a police department serving a community that stretches seven miles from the Ohio River north. The presence of two large malls along the commercial strip of Lewis & Clark Parkway as well as the growing business on Veteran's Parkway adds to the work load of Clarksville's Police Department.
The Clarksville Police Department is involved in the community through sponsorship of youth sports and the Shop With a Cop program, which pairs an officer with a child for a special shopping trip at Christmas. When the work load permits the police department also provides officers to speak at special events throughout the community on such topics as safety in the community, and even providing finger printing of children with the assistance of reserve officers.
Senior citizens in Clarksville can register for the RUOK program, which sets up a daily phone call to make sure there are no problems. Also, residents who will be out of town for extended periods can have regular patrols past their homes through the vacation watch service.
The Clarksville Police Department is a professional force that encourages officers to continually upgrade their skills by attending continuing education courses. These courses not only support their development as a police officer they also support their ability to provide the best possible safety for the Town of Clarksville.
